Because she is a much better writer and it happened to us both...
So, Joanna and I just had a Grand Adventure. I swear, we spent a full 90 minutes in the middle of a piece of absurdist theatre. We had a pretty simple plan: that Joanna and I would shop for jewelry in West Newton and that my mom would return after grocery-shopping at Trader Joe's and pick us up. However, the jewelry shop was closed and our mom had just driven away when we discovered this. So we thought we'd meander down to the grocery store, meet my mom there and go home, instead of standing outside in the freezing cold for twenty minutes. So we are just walking up to the grocery store when we see my mom driving off. A bunch of jumping up and down and waving does nothing to catch her attention. But we figure she'll drive back to the jewelry store, see we're not there, and then drive back to the grocery store, figuring we've gone to meet her there. So we spent about 15 minutes maybe--we had no concept of time because we had no watches or cellphones--waiting outside at a bus stop in front of the store. We had a few ultra-absurdist moments of "Let's go." "We can't." "Why not?" "We're waiting for Mom." "Oh."..."My foot hurts.""Let's go."etc...And when we finally gave up and went inside the store to possibly find a phone and call her, we were quite frozen. So we wandered around the store, thawing, ate some free samples, called and left a message because she wasn't home yet (which begs the question: where was she?), and then set out for home. We walked arm in arm, both incredibly cold and rather uncomfortable, as I was wearing a thin skirt and she had to go to the bathroom. We reflected upon the absurdity of our utter lack of preparation for such an eventuality. So we walked back into West Newton and to our church. Upon checking the fourth door we got inside, peed and tried to find some open office or other sign of intelligent life. The church is large and gothic and really quite scary when it's entirely dark. But we didn't find anyone, so we tried to call again from the payphone, which was broken so we had to call collect. She rejected the charges. We set out again, singing and reflecting on our situation. As we crossed the bridge over the Mass Pike I looked at the commuter rail station below and remarked that it would be lovely to take the commuter rail home (just one stop), but that it would be impractical because we would spend so much time waiting for the train. Just as I had finished speaking a commuter train appeared ahead, rolling into the station, going our direction. We looked at each other, creeped out and amused, and decided to keep going on foot. The eerieness of the scene only increased as street lamps began to burn out as we approached them (two or three in all). Half a block later our mom came and picked us up.
Yeah, that was fun.
In other news, the new camera is being repaired because I am an idiot and dropped it the day after getting it. Yaayyyyyyy!
